May 19 was a very Fateful day as anime fans, con goers, cosplayers, and even other people flock around Glorietta 2’s entrance for Otaku Connections Episode V entitled Return of the Kings.
From the visuals that had been set up online weeks before the event, we already got the clue that it will be Fate themed– one of the most prominent fandoms of today.
Otaku Connection was an open event– there are no entrance fees, making it engaging for everyone. All mall-goers were free to roam around the stalls with the cosplayers and fans, taking photos and looking at the good stuff they could buy– from art, fan merch, accessories, and even food.
There were even displays of different figures near the stage area for the photography contest.
Naru and Mykoll lead the event, raising everyone’s energy despite the first day’s small crowd.
The program kicked off with a workshop to warm up everyone. Goenkendama took over the stage, showing off and teaching everyone kendama skills. Of course the segment will not be complete without having guests try it out with a Simon-says inspired kendama game.
This was followed with a performance from Project Materia, a band who cover songs mostly from Final Fantasy and for this event, Fate.
The music went on through the contestants of Ongaku Knights, an individual Japanese and Anime singing contest. Three contestants serenaded the crowd on the first day.
The duet category, Dual Hearts soon followed with a pair who brought in nostalgia as they performed a song from a classic anime.
The mini music fest took a break as the panel was introduced in the EVA on Focus. The members were renowned people in the anime and cosplay industry which Otaku Connect have featured in their online magazine.
The festivities returned as the indie idol group, ALICE Project, graced everyone with their four their idol performances while in cosplay. They had four performances in which the first three were sub-units and the grand finale having everyone dance in AKB48’s Koisuru Fortune Cookie.

Of course the idol supporters were there, complete with their light sticks and chants.
And of course, the much awaited Cosplay Contest was the highlight of the first day, with cosplayers brandishing their costumes onstage.
It was on the second day where cosplayers went full on-Fate mode, with Heroic Servants invading the stage with their well-prepared costumes and skits.
We hope to see more of these on the next episode.
